Since 2016, I have intermittently shared recipes, nutritional and lifestyle advice on my YouTube channel, documenting my learnings from attending a lifestyle coaching certification, reading books, experimenting with recipes, and attending an MSc in Clinical Nutrition. In this article, I will share five YouTube marketing insights that I learned from comparing two videos on the same subject, which I uploaded in 2018 and 2020, respectively.
In 2018, I uploaded a video on the benefits of drinking nettle tea. Two years later, I did a similar but more extensive video on the same subject. Below I am comparing the videos alongside their data from the time they were published up to a day ago (September 1, 2022).

Optimize the Video File
Before uploading the second video, I optimized it for title, description, and tags, which helped Google bots identify and rank the video. Remember, YouTube is a search engine, so optimizing the video file can improve its discoverability.
Optimize Video Description and Tags
Similar to optimizing the video file, the second video had a longer title with long-tail keywords, a lengthier description with naturally integrated related keywords, and relevant tags, which can also improve discoverability.
Video Length and Engagement
YouTube's goal is to keep users on the channel, so it prioritizes and promotes videos that people watch longer. A longer video with more engaging visuals will naturally be more favored by YouTube. Videos that retain the attention of users for 40% or more can potentially perform better.
Impression CTR%
Both videos had a great Impression CTR%, with the second video having a 2% higher CTR% than the first. I updated the YouTube cover of the second video three times until I was happy with the CTR%. Changing the cover image every five days and analyzing data can provide informative insights. Don't be discouraged if you don't see the desired volume in the first 24 hours, as views can increase up to 30 days after the video goes live (as shown in the graph below).

Likes vs Dislikes
The percentage of likes vs dislikes can affect the impression volume of your videos. The second video had a higher like vs dislike percentage compared to the first, which can improve its performance. Pay attention to the comments section, which also sends engagement signals to YouTube. Initiate conversations by asking viewers for their opinions or sharing helpful guides.
These are my five YouTube marketing insights from analyzing the performance of two videos on the same subject. I haven't mentioned anything about shorts which are on the rise in this article. You can read my article on how to use shorts to drive traffic to your long tail content in another article on my website.
