In this blog post, I have a subject that came from a few of you actually. You wanted to find out more about the gut flora and how it affects weight loss. A great subject and thank you for bringing it up. If there are more things you would love to see from me, then please do leave a comment below.
Gut flora is the complex community of microorganisms that live in our digestive tracts. Studies have found that how the body converts food into energy depends largely on the different types of microbes a person has in their gut and also on the type of microbes they carry. Lean individuals seem to have a healthier flora in their gut where the good microbes can flourish and if those guys flourish then they help you maintain or lose weight easier.
More studies have also shown that without gut flora, issues such as levels of anxiety, depressive behaviour and deficits in sociability and cognition arise.
I am sure you are wondering how you can improve your gut flora and nourish your good microbes to help you manage your weight. There are a few things you can do.
Tip #1 is something that Dr Hyman recommends and that is to ensure that 75% of your meal is veggies which promote the growth of flora in your gut.
Tip #2 is to eat good fats such as omega 3, olive oil, avocados, almonds and coconut oil. When increasing the consumption of these fats you may naturally feel a tendency to be active and so...do it.
Tip #3 is to eat foods that contain probiotics such as fermented vegetables or sauerkraut. You can also take probiotic pills to help you if you find it difficult to consume it through foods.
