So let’s start…
Tip #1 - Buy fresh produce & freeze it or buy frozen produce
Freezing produce allows us to consume them at a later time thus saving them so they do not go bad or us ending up throwing them which would be a waste of money among other things. If you are concerned with nutrients of frozen produce, you don’t need to be as frozen produce keeps its nutrition value and sometimes are more nutritious to be consumed compared to fresh that has been out for a few days.
Tip #2 - Look for sales and plan your shopping accordingly.
Most stores run sales at different periods so if you find something that you tend to consume but is expensive, then stall buying it until after it goes on sale and buy it in bulk. When I started experimenting with plant based mylk, I was buying mylk 2 or 3 carbons where they were on sale. Thus saving some money.
Tip #3 - Buy in bulk
I am a bargain seeker, don’t judge me but if i want to enjoy good quality food affordably, then I have to be. I tend to buy in kilos things that last long such as brown rice, oats, brown pasta, beans and canned goods. This way I buy them cheaper and also don’t have to worry about them for quite a long time.
Tip #4 - Replace refined or white grains with whole grains and beans
I have already a video on why it is better to eat whole grains. Besides whole grains being a better choice nutritionally, they tend to be also cheaper than buying refined or white grains. You will do good for both your body and your pocket :). So embrace quinoa, brown rice and beans.
Tip #5 - Go to the farmers market at the end of the day or go to your local market
I find that farmer’s market and local markets tend to have some of the produce cheaper compared to what you can find them in supermarkets where there is a big supply chain and thus more cost is aggregated to what we buy. For fact I know that in north, east and south London you are able to find fresh and good quality products such as avocados, bananas, spinach, potatoes affordably. You will be surprised. I also found that if you become friends with the people in the market, they will throw some extra bonuses in your bag. ;)
Tip #6 - Avoid shopping when you are hungry
You know very well why I am mentioning this. When we are hungry we tend to buy things we do not really need and that are not as not nutritious. When home, we regret buying them. I have been there. I get it. So, to avoid such a waste, it is better that you have a meal or a snack before heading to your farmer’s market or a food store.
Tip #7 - Plan your meals in advance
Meal planning is great as it will help you build a shopping list that will contain only items you really need, thus avoiding waste. You also do not need to prepare a new meal every day but cook once for two or three days which will save you both time and money. And this bring me to my next tip which is...
Tip #8 - Pack your lunch
...pack your lunch. Even if it is just a sandwich as you can still use ingredients that you have in your home thus wasting nothing. This is also why it is important to cook for more than just one day because if you get busy one evening you have already a meal prepared for next day. No need to worry about what you need to eat or how much money you need to spend.
Tip #9 - Love leftovers
Love your leftovers, you can make a great meal from them. My meals from my leftovers tend to be colourful and diverse. A bit of rice, half an avocado, chickpeas from a day before, some kale and beans topped with some olive oil and lemon juice...yum!
