HEALTH BENEFITS OF CINNAMON | Uses of Cinnamon

Cinnamon has been around for  thousands of years. It has been used as a perfuming agent by Egyptians, it was mentioned in the Old Testament as an ingredient in anointing oil and it was really popular in Europe when brought by Arabs because of its ability to enhance the flavour of any dish. Cinnamon is also used as a preservative for meat and in some cases for bakery products. 

 

Cinnamon is loaded with antioxidants, has anti-inflammatory properties, lowers blood sugar levels and helps fight bacteria and fungal infections (healthline.com). Because of health promoting traits, cinnamon can be used to improve digestion and blood circulation, strengthen the heart, prevent heart attacks and treat colds and flu

 

There are two types of cinnamon that we encounter today, Ceylon and Cassia cinnamon. Ceylon is the type of cinnamon that is known as "true" cinnamon, it is of a higher quality to Cassia and also a bit sweeter. Cassia is the more popular variety that we find today and it is less expensive than Ceylon.  

 

 

Cinnamon is a really easy ingredient, so you can add it to your breakfast. It goes well with:

  • porridge

  • rice puddings

  • smoothies

  • chocolate 

  • cappuccinos (on top of the foam)

 or

  • fruit salad

  • cakes

  • cookies

Cinnamon and honey are also a great couple that can help you against inflammation and fight acne. A paste of cinnamon and honey may make miracles when everything else fails when it come to pimples.
