Sugar free diet - How to quit sugar

Hey Wonderful, 

In this episode, I will be discussing a very controversial subject which is sugar. 

I will share with you a little bit of my story. Up until end of 2015, I was addicted to sugar, I would do anything just to have that small piece of chocolate which would end up being a whole lot of chocolate. You know what I’m talking about. I developed crazy mood swings and my weight was like yo yo. When I was on a diet, I would rather eat nothing all day just to have a piece of a cake than to not have it at all. 

Quitting sugar for me was a slow process, initially I changed my diet where I included more natural and home cooked food. I also signed up for a half marathon so I was training for that. Almost immediately, I noticed that my sugar cravings decreased massively, I would go days without sugar and I felt good. Even my mood swings changed. 

At the end of 2015 I decided to quit processed & sugary foods altogether. 2016 was a sugar free year for me. Today I am more flexible with myself and may eat a dessert prepared with love by a friend or my mum once every month or two months. 

It is worth clarifying that when I mention sugar, I am referring to fructose. Fructose is metabolized in liver so it is not used as energy and as a result we eat more of it. As we eat more of it, the liver stores it as fat and this process causes metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes. It is also worth noting that fructose does not turn on our appetite hormone, thus we never feel full. All other foods do, except for sugar. This explains why no matter how much sweets and desserts we eat, we still have space for more of it.
